The term 'Atelier' has multiple meanings as the word travels through time. It functions both as a term for a working studio where a master might take on an apprentice, and gradually evolves into a methodology or specific style of practice as it was taught to students. While there were many art institutions that evolved from what the house of Medici helped solidify in the Renaissance, the tradition of master and pupil in a working studio or Atelier, continued on, as it continues still. Here is a short history of the lineage of that tradition as it relates to the DRAA.
